Soap Box Derby hits the streets of downtown Mount Dora on Oct. 12.

Drivers get your goggles on! It's time for the 3rd annual Down the Hill Soap Box Derby. Head to Evans Park on October 12 to check out the creative, homemade cars and watch as they race downhill with only gravity and physics as their engines.

New free shuttle service in downtown Mount Dora

To help ease the downtown parking dilemma, the City of Mount Dora is beginning a pilot program of free shuttle service on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays beginning October 4. Learn more about the shuttle program and its service area here.

Last month Fortune Tea opened a storefront in Mount Dora. The shop features popular boba teas, slushies, fresh fruit teas, and freshly brewed teas, plus snacks and treats. Read more

Iconic Mason Jar restaurant changes ownership

After more than four decades, the family-owned Mason Jar, a hot-spot for breakfast in Dona Vista near Eustis, recently changed hands. Loyal customers shouldn't expect big changes, as the new owners are reportedly keeping things much the same.

Jewelry designer opens retail location in Mount Dora

Jewelry by Maria recently opened on the second floor of the Renaissance Building in downtown Mount Dora and features casual, handmade jewelry. The hours are spotty, but if you're in the area, stop by for a peek.

Mount Dora's only men's boutique opens downtown

Finally, a shop in Mount Dora that caters exclusively to guys. The Peppered Donkey recently opened and features men's apparel and accessories with an outdoorsy vibe. The store is tucked on Third Avenue next to its sister store, The Salty Mare.

Mount Dora City Council increases tax millage rate

This fiscal year the City of Mount Dora will balance its budget with a tax millage rate of 6.3 mills, which is 11.22% over the roll-back rate of 5.66 mills. It is less than the maximum millage rate on TRIM notices residents received over the summer.
