MEET ONE OF MOUNT DORA'S HOTTEST  NEW TALENTS

7/1/2018

Picture
Take an evening stroll on a downtown Mount Dora sidewalk and you’re bound to hear a sultry siren’s voice that gently lures music lovers into one of the many live music venues in the historic district.   Once inside, all eyes are on the young artist projecting the light, yet soulful vocals.

In a short time,  free-spirited Christina Adinolfi has connected with a diverse audience and developed a following.    She selects covers that range from old-school classic rock standards to more current pop and country.  Her song choices often have deeply emotional lyrics that, at first, may seem to lie beyond her age, but she always pulls it off.   Along with her vocal talent, Adinolfi’s lightheartedness and humility are also on open display in the intimate venueswhere she performs.   Read more

TOP 8 TIPS FOR MOTHER'S DAY IN MOUNT DORA

4/28/2018

Picture
Making Mom feel appreciated on her special day is easy in Mount Dora.  Whether she loves a big brunch, breakfast in bed, a thoughtful gift, or an outdoor hike, this cheat sheet with helpful links can help you plan the perfect Mother’s Day.

Picture
1.  BRUNCH & BREAKFAST
This is the first time Lake Receptions will be hosting a Mother’s Day brunch buffet, and they’re going all out.  In addition to dishes like herb-crusted tenderloin, chicken prosciutto with fresh mozzarella and basil, grilled salmon, and ham with Jezebel sauce, there will be a saxophonist and a photographer providing family portraits for purchase.   We're guessing you should make reservations soon.

If Mom prefers to order off a breakfast menu, the Rocking Rabbit Cafe next to Mount Dora Brewing is the place to be. Their eggs Benedict, blueberry pancakes and omelettes always impress.  The free mimosa for all ladies is a great touch. For the mom that loves a hearty traditional British breakfast, Magical Meat Boutique is also offering moms a free Mimosa.

Picture
2. BREAKFAST IN BED
This year there is a foolproof way to serve Mom breakfast in bed.  Cody’s On 4th in downtown Mount Dora is taking orders for take-out quiches in a choice of three flavors.  A whole quiche and fruit cost $30 and must be ordered by noon on Friday, May 11. Mom is going to wonder how you pulled it off!   Of course, if you would rather take her to Cody’s, they’re offering a $10 “all you care to drink” mimosas-with-entree-purchase promotion.

Picture
3.  NOT YOUR EVERYDAY FLOWERS
They are a must on Mother’s Day, but they don’t have to be a big, costly bouquet.  Noni at the Olive Branch is a Donnelly Street store that sells beautiful, blooming orchids at great prices.  Dudley, one of the owners, will even tell you how to easily care for them.

4.  RELAXING LUNCH
If Mom loves relaxing lunch, there is no shortage of places downtown.  The delicious Italian fare at Olive Branch Mediterranean Grill makes it a great choice.   Las Palmas Cuban Restaurant with its bountiful seafood paella and wide variety of authentic Cuban dishes also provides live music in the background, plus a free rose and specialty mimosa for mom.
Picture
5. THOUGHTFUL GIFTS:
Finding Mom thoughtful gifts in Mount Dora is a snap if you know where  to start.

For the nester:  Cozy Nest, an adorable downtown boutique has a section specifically for moms, like cute frames and signs. Their Face Plant line of soft, lightweight robes and sleep accessories are perfect for Florida summers

For the creative mom:   If your mom loves non-traditional gifts, you’re bound to find something she’ll love at Every Nook + Cranny artist collective downtown.  This large labyrinth of original art features everything from paintings and artisan jewelry to pottery and furniture made by local artists.

For the cook:  For the mom that loves to entertain or whip up amazing meals, a gift from Mount Dora Olive Oil Company is a no-brainer.  Not sure what to get? Their staff always make great recommendations.

For the sporty mom:  Anyone that’s been to a sporting event recently knows there are plenty of moms in the stands.  Ashley’s Flags & Sports Shoppe has tons of choices for Mom’s favorite collegiate and professional teams.

For the bling-lover:   Lake Cares Food Pantry has 1000 raffle tickets available for a stunning 3.51-carat diamond necklace by Gold In Art Jewelers. The elegant tickets come with a printed explanation of the fundraiser, so Mom will understand the thoughtfulness of the gift and the necklace she may win.

For the lighthearted:  Take a stroll into Julianne’s Coastal Cottage to find coastal decor, whimsical gifts and top gourmet food brands. They will even offer you a free wine smoothie sample while you shop.

For the shoe and handbag lover:  After all, a girl can never have too many accessories.  For a great selection of leather purses and shoes to add to her growing collection, head to Becker’s Best Shoes (formerly Donnelly Euro Footwear).

Picture
6. PAMPER HER
Moms take care of others all year.  What better way to make her feel special than to provide some pampering.  Saving Face Esthetics offers gift cards for luxurious and relaxing facials that will de-stress any mom.  You can always throw in some bath bombs and soothing body butter from Naples Soap Company, too.

Picture
7.  MOM’S TIME-OUT
No doubt, sometimes the daily problem-solver of the family just needs a break.  If she enjoys her wine, grab a gift card from Maggie’s Attic where she can choose to use it on a glass or bottle of wine, a fun Wine Tasting Walk, or even a useful “wine purse.”

Picture
8.  THE GREAT OUTDOORS
If Mom loves nature, exercise and the great outdoors, Palm Island Boardwalk is the place to take her after a Mother’s Day meal.  The elevated wooden walkway winds through old cypress trees along Lake Dora. There are plenty of shady resting spots, too.

THE BEST OF MOUNT DORA VILLAGE MARKET

8/2/2017

Picture
After a few months in its new downtown home, Mount Dora Village Market has come into its own. The Sunday market, located in Sunset Park in the city’s vibrant historic district, boasts Central Florida vendors that sell everything from homemade sweets, fresh veggies and seafood to tropical plants, natural bath products and handmade home decor.  The vendors are ready for business from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mount Dora Buzz contributors had the enviable task of scouring the market to find the items you don’t’ want to miss.  Here’s your shortcut to shopping the best of the market:

Picture
BEST OF THE MARKET OVERALL:
Winner: Spicy Apple Jam by Jovita Treats.
We tried this savory jam on vanilla bean ice cream and no one could get enough.  It would be delish on a grilled ham and brie sandwich or as a pork tenderloin glaze.  It’s excellent to serve with brie, aged cheddar, chevre or cream cheese.

PictureVendor: THE Seafood
BEST SAVORY:
Winner:  Smoked Salmon by “THE Seafood”
We tried this on crackers by itself and made smoked salmon spread by adding cream cheese, lemon and fresh dill.  Either option is wonderful for an easy appetizer.
Don’t miss:  Smoked Garlic seasoning by Smoke Showin BBQ. The seasoning is all dehydrated garlic with some added smokiness.  It was excellent added to our favorite grilling rub, as well as sprinkled on roasted veggies.  This is a must for garlic lovers.
Don’t miss: The roasted garlic and herb olive oil dip by Simply Savory
We loved this with a crusty loaf of sourdough, but it was also excellent tossed in tortellini.  Also try  Lisa’s Ultimate Vinegars.

PictureVendor: Smoke Showin' BBQ
BEST SWEETS:
Winner:  Red White & Blue Jam by Jovita Treats
This low-sugar, fresh local jam comes packed with the flavors of ripe strawberries and blueberries which are then accented with vanilla.  We warmed it up and poured it over vanilla bean ice cream.  After all, why spread it on toast when you have ice cream?
Don’t miss:  Smoked bacon bourbon syrup by Smoke Showin BBQ
This is a must for anyone that loves bacon.  Great on pancakes, but also very tasty when lightly drizzled on sauteed green beans and topped with blue cheese crumbles.   For the more adventurous, pour a little over ice cream or cheesecake.  Yum!
More you won’t want to miss: Delicious and decadent cake truffles by Level Up Treats of Eustis, freshly made cannolis by Orlando Fresh Bread and the fruit custard spread by Melatta Spreads.

PictureVendor: John Plank Greenhouses
BEST PLANTS:
Edible plants, by John Plank Greenhouses
There was a big selection of edible plants like olive trees, coffee trees and various fruit trees, plus exotic tropical plants.  All appeared very healthy.

Don’t miss: Orchids by the Orchid Man. Take your pick of healthy phalaenopsis and dendrobium orchids with or without decorative pots.  Plus, the Orchid Man will answer all your orchid-growing questions.

PictureVendor: Darjees Tea
BEST BEVERAGE:
Winner:  Blackberry Tea by DarJees Tea Box
Of the many delicious offerings of fresh black tea, we chose the blackberry to make iced tea.   Surprisingly, two regular-sized tea bags make a whole pitcher, and everyone loved it.
Don’t miss: The fresh-squeezed lemonade booth to cool off on a steamy day.

PictureVendor: Barse Bath Co.
BEST BATH & BODY:
Winner:  Eucalyptus & mint dead sea salt glow by Barnse Bath Co.
The scent is so relaxing and makes a morning shower feel like you were at the spa.
Don’t miss:  Fragrant handmade soaps by Iyakere.

PictureVendor: Sawdust to Stitches
BEST HOME GOODS:
Winner:  Handmade wood signs and decor by Sawdust to Stitches.
We found their cheerful signs to be thoughtful hostess gifts.
Don’t miss:  Watercolor greeting cards by Briana at Bubble Gum Colors and the stain removing bar by Tangie.

Shoppers are welcome to bring canned food donations for Lake Care Food Pantry to the market’s donation bin.    The market is open every Sunday at Sunset Park except during certain downtown festivals and events.

It’s one of the most anticipated delights of fall:  pumpkin-flavored everything!  Muffins and cheesecakes fly off menus, while homes fill up with the smell of pumpkin pie.   In an effort to help pumpkin lovers maximize the season, here’s the Great Pumpkin Tour with things they don’t want to miss.

Picture
Pumpkin Muffins -  The homemade, generously-sized muffins at Cody's on 4th are always moist and have just the right amount of pumpkin spice. (111 E. 4th Ave., downtown Mount Dora)

Pumpkin Cupcakes - Iced with cream cheese frosting, these treats have been favorites for years at Cupcake Delights.  Get there early before they sell out. (122 E. 4th Ave., downtown Mount Dora)

Homemade pumpkin ice cream and pumpkin cheesecakes - Small bites from Le Petit Sweet never disappoint and their pumpkin treats are no exception.  Careful, these are deliciously addictive. (110 W. 5th Ave., downtown Mount Dora)

Pumpkin Spice Latte - These drinks are anxiously awaited all year as a rite of passage into Fall.  You'll find tasty variations at Cody's on 4th, The Village Coffee Pot, Cupcake Delights and Le Petit Sweet.  (All in downtown Mount Dora)

Pumpkin Beer - This popular seasonal beverage comes in lagers, porters, stouts and ales, just to name a few.  Maggie's Attic has too many varieties to count, so beer lovers can rejoice.  (237 W. 4th Ave., downtown Mount Dora)

Pumpkin Crack donuts -  If you've never been to Joy Donuts, here is another reason you gotta go.   You'll find their pink food trailer on the corner of U.S. 441 and Wolf Branch Road on weekends.

Picture
Spicy Pumpkin Bisque - The homemade recipe is absolute perfection at Cody's on 4th.  Grab a bowl on a day with a chill because it has just a little kick.  Be sure to call ahead because it’s a special.  (111 E. 4th Ave., downtown Mount Dora)

Maple Pumpkin Butter  - Who knew toast could be so good?  Julianne's Coastal Cottage sells this heaven-in-a-jar which is to die for when generously applied to toast or ice cream. (135 E. 4th Ave., downtown Mount Dora)

When you just can't sneak out for a treat or you're trying to behave, here's some ways you can still enjoy a little pumpkin spice:

TOP 10 LOCAL DESSERTS WELL WORTH THE GUILT

9/25/2016

Picture
A discerning sweet tooth can be tricky to satisfy.  Mount Dora Buzz took one for the team and researched treats you don't want to miss.   Make sure you save room for these top 10 local desserts (in no particular order).  Just don't blame us for any added dimples.

1.  It's impossible to decide between the chocolate croissants and homemade bourbon vanilla ice cream sandwiches at Le Petit Sweet.  We've been unsuccessful leaving with just one item. (110 W. Fifth Ave., downtown Mount Dora)

2.  There are no words to describe the Maple Bacon donuts made fresh daily by Donut King and sold at Hometown Market. Due to their addictive nature, they could become illegal any day now, so hurry.  (401 Plaza Drive, Eustis)

3.  The generous key lime pound cake and their infamous carrot cake are both made from scratch at Cody's on 4th.  They're worth every pound they may add.  Delish!  (111 E. Fourth Ave., downtown Mount Dora)

4.  Holy guacamole!  The warm churros and vanilla ice cream from Eduardo's Lokos Tacos are large enough to share...but you won't.  (226 W. Alfred St., Tavares)

5.  There are tons of tasty ice cream options, but the most crave-worthy we discovered is the red bean ice cream at Saigon Fusion.  It sounded odd, so we had to try and now it's a fave! (16700 U.S. 441, Mount Dora)

Picture
6.  For those less daring, we found the best (and biggest) chocolate chunk cookies at Scoop's on 5th.  Not only are they chock full of chocolate, the classic cookies are the size of your head.  (130 E. Fifth Ave., downtown Mount Dora)

7.  Hands down the best creme brulee is the classic at Goblin Market.  Although sinfully rich, you'll finish every delectable bite.  (330 Dora Drawdy Way, downtown Mount Dora)

8.  The warm French toast donuts are worth standing in line for at Joy Donuts on weekends.  Trust us...get three.  One to eat right away.  One to share.  One to eat later with vanilla ice cream! (U.S. 441 & Wolf Branch Road, Mount Dora; weekends only)

9.  No need for a road trip to Cafe Du Monde.  1921 serves warm graham beignets, the New Orleans version of fried dough, with tropical guava and key lime curds. (142 E. Fourth Ave., downtown Mount Dora)

10.  Local favorites are always fresh cupcakes from Cupcake Delights.  Overwhelmed by the selection?  No worries, try the carrot cake, red velvet or Willis & Cream.  (122 E. Fourth Ave., downtown Mount Dora)
