In 1977,  an energetic, young dreamer with a wicked laugh and creative streak arrived on Mount Dora's doorstep.  By applying his woodworking skills and unflappable ingenuity to the crafting and repairing of furniture, Jeff Herbst built a successful carpentry business uptown.

Sixteen years ago he began crafting beer at home, and eventually his thirst for beer making grew into an unbridled passion.  Following the unrelenting call of hops and barley,  Herbst, an Ohio native, spent three years converting his carpentry shop into a full-blown brewery complete with four fermentation tanks and six bright tanks for the clarified beer.  Mount Dora Brewing, his labor of love, opened its doors over six years ago.  Read more

It's difficult to get a favorable consensus on a restaurant.   Difficult, but not impossible.

Lago Dora Ristorante opened six weeks ago in Tavares and diners' glowing reviews are piling up.

The brick oven and colorful mosaic tables are the focal point of the inviting modern space, but the food steals the show.  Their lunch menu features ten fresh dishes all priced at $7.50, including chicken alfredo, spaghetti with perfectly seasoned meatballs, shrimp diavolo and their popular 10" margherita pizza.   Read more

It's rapidly becoming a favorite season of the year.  Although typically only lasting 6 weeks, Lake County's blueberry season is bountiful.

The state's history of growing blueberries began in the late 1800's.   The sweet, tasty crop was one of Florida's tastiest secrets.  It wasn't until the 1970's that the current hybrid cultivar blueberry was introduced and by the mid 1980's mass plantings took root in north central and northwestern Florida.   The industry has grown ten fold and over the last 30 years, hundreds of small blueberry farms have sprouted throughout the state.
