free trees? gotta love it!

Yep, it's never been easier or cheaper to be a tree hugger.  

In advance of Arbor Day, the Lake Soil & Water Conservation District along with Florida Forest Service will be giving away bare-root tree seedlings on Thursday, Jan. 7. 

Tree varieties available will include Dogwood, Sweetgum, Wax Myrtle, Red Cedar and Slash Pine. The seedlings are between eight and 24 inches tall and have been harvested when dormant and without soil around the roots, making them easier to transport and plant. 

The seedlings will be given away to the public, beginning at 11 a.m. at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension Center Discovery Gardens Classroom, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares.   Donations will be accepted to support the tree giveaway program. Trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

This annual event is observed in January in honor of Arbor Day, which in Florida, is recognized on the third Friday in January. Those attending the giveaway event are also invited to explore Discovery Gardens, a 3.5-acre habitat next to the Extension Center office, which is open from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
