LOCAL ARTISTS CREATE FOR A CAUSE

Want to raise some money?  Tap Mount Dora’s artists’ community.

That was the idea when Artisans on Fifth decided to join the fight against breast cancer. The local artists’ co-op is the organizer of “Bra-Vo,” a fundraiser for no- or low-cost diagnostic testing and treatment for breast cancer in Lake County.

Fast forward four years and Bra-Vo has turned into an event which, thanks to its small army of inspired artists and passionate patrons, has raised over $24,000 for the cause.

Bra-Vo is once again calling for artists of all levels to create masterpieces on supplied art bra forms.  In the past, creations have gone from the whimsical and outrageous to stunningly beautiful and inspiring.

Artists  return their completed forms to be exhibited in the gallery at Mount Dora Center for the Arts.  Money is raised by auctioning the creative forms during a public reception.  Additional funds are collected by one dollar ballots cast for people’s favorites.  Of course, the public is encouraged to vote often to aid the cause.

Artists interested in participating in Bra-Vo can pick up their bra form and entry packet at Artisans on Fifth during normal business hours.   Artists can choose from a full torso in black or white, in male or female bra forms.  The entry fee is $30 for artists or $50 for businesses.

Art bra forms are due back by September 23rd at noon and will be part of the exhibit from October 1 through October 23 in the gallery at Mount Dora Center for the Arts.  The public is invited to visit the gallery and vote either in person or online at www.Bra-Vo.org.

Bra-Vo 2016 Gala Reception for artists & sponsors will be held on October 14th, 5 to 9 p.m. and is open to the public.  Artisans on Fifth is located at 134 E. Fifth Avenue, Mount Dora.

RIDERS MAKE MEMORIES FOR SERIOUSLY ILL KIDS

It's the most fun and compassionate place in Florida.

For 20 years, Camp Boggy Creek has made memories for seriously ill children.  For six years, residents have early supported the camp during its Annual Challenge Ride, a fundraising event for cyclists.  Last  year's event drew over 350 riders.

This year's event will take place on September 10, providing cyclists the choice of three distances–a 40 mile or 60 mile ride through beautiful Lake County, and a 15 mile off-road scenic ride through the Seminole State Forest.  The routes are designed to provide a course for every level of rider.

The large Eustis retreat was founded in 1996 by Paul Newman and General Norman Schwarzkopf, so that seriously ill children could enjoy the experiences of camp in a setting full of compassion, laughter and acceptance.  The 232-acre camp serves children ages seven to sixteen diagnosed with chronic or life-threatening conditions--at no charge.

Camp Boggy Creek serves thousands of campers and their families year-round through activity-packed weekly and weekend camp programs. The retreat offers children the chance to catch their first fish, go horseback riding or climb a ropes
tower, while making new friends.
