A direct challenge is being made to every local cook: Whip up your favorite dish to help break the Guinness World Record for the largest potluck ever.
The goal is to gather over 2000 people on Saturday, November 12, to break the record which currently stands at over 1500 potluck dishes. The free event is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the back field at Renningers Antique Center and Flea Market and will feature live music by David Oliver Willis and his American Idol friends, including Season 12 winner Candace Glover.
Zach Zehnder, pastor at TheCross and one of the event’s organizers, is hoping individuals, groups, churches, businesses and organizations will participate. People are asked to bring a dish or beverage that will serve at least six people. Cooks must carry the dish to the entry table themselves, according to the event’s rules. Entries are due at the buffet tables by 3:00 p.m. to be counted. Participants are required to pre-register at www.thecrossmtdora.org
The organizers hope to raise awareness and encourage donations to Lake Cares Food Pantry, the non-profit that feeds the hungry in Lake County. Last year, Lake Cares Food Pantry helped more than 25,000 people and distributed more than 170 tons of food with the help of generous community donations.
In the past nine months, Lake Cares Food Pantry has opened two satellite distribution sites. The Eustis Pantry Center is located at the Bates Avenue Resource Center, 1128 Clifford Ave. in Eustis. The second site is at the Martin Luther King Center at 803 Florida Ave. in Mount Dora.
