WAWA FANS IN MOUNT DORA IN FOR A LONG WAIT

In the spring of last year, it was announced that Wawa, a national convenience store and gas station chain, was slated to replace the small Shell station on the corner of U.S. 441 and Morningside Drive near Lake Gertrude.   The chain of large gas stations has gained popularity for its variety of take-out food options.

Although the Wawa project has been approved for several months by the City of Mount Dora, Wawa is adding approximately 90 new stores in Florida and construction isn’t expected to begin in Mount Dora until next summer, according to a city official.  However, the company couldn't confirm that specific timing.

Wawa plans to kick off its North Central Florida launch on September 12 when it breaks ground on three stores in Ocala.  At that time the company plans to announce its timing for specific sites in the region, including Mount Dora.  "The timing of our site openings are carefully planned and take into consideration many factors in our overall expansion efforts," said a Wawa spokesperson.

Last year, the city of Mount Dora acted promptly to annex the approximately 1.25 acre property and re-zoned it as necessary for Wawa.

Wawa opened its first store in Florida in 2012 and had over 100 locations in the Sunshine State as of 2017. Of the over 730 locations in the eastern part of the U.S., approximately 500 also provide gasoline.

I was excited to get a wawa close to the house.
I am not happy with what happened to the end of Old Eustis Rd. It is a real inconvenience, to put it politely.

While traffic on Old Eustis has decreased, it's inconvienent for us that live right there and can no longer use Morningside when we go to places like Khols, I have to drive right by that street to go further to make a u-turn onto E. Crooked Lake. My son's bus can no longer go that way, so they are forced to make a u-turn each day 2 times on the side street, and not to mention, how short of a light there is at E. Crooked lake going onto 441.... YET, no change to add a turn land turning onto 441 was even a condersideration. SMH... bad decisions, bad decisions... The E. Crooked Lake side on Old Eustis needs to be widened to make a left turn lane and we need lights changed so the turns from either side can turn, and then go straight.. Then maybe less accidents, like the fatal one that just happened... seriousl, that new road change at Morningside only made things worse..

It is a shame that so many are now inconvenienced - myself included, altho I have to say it is an improvement leaving Morningside to go left on 441. Not so much for my drive home. Since this change I have seen DAILY incidents of people traveling down the wrong side of the oneway to go toward the lake on Morningside, and cutting through the dermatology office to be able to go down Old Eustis from Morningside.... Even saw a truck drive over the sidewalk and through the grass to be able to go down Morningside from 441 without having to go to the next light. Really?!! Accidents waiting to happen because people are impatient. What a shame.

Have lived on Old Eustis for 25+ years and the traffic issue has greatly decreased. With that said the garbage being thrown from passing cars that used it as a cut through has decreased as well. Great decision to block off the road at Morningside Dr. to regulate traffic flow from Wawa.

Will Mount Dora get a Wawa? It'll be nice to have it.
