1/11/2022

Picture
What happens when  you combine Victorian costumes with innovative technology and the industrial age? To make it really interesting, add heaping spoonfuls of drama and fantasy.

The result is Steampunk, a fantastical world where Albert Einstein, the wild west and Mad Max collide.

Renninger's Steampunk Industrial Show has grown to what is arguably the largest festival of its kind in the Southeast.  The free event is set under the oak trees of Mount Dora and features some of the best people-watching in Central Florida.  Goggled time-travellers stroll among the show’s vintage vendors, steampunk entertainers, impressive live music and artists.  The event takes place twice a year in January and October.

“Steampunk,”  first coined in 1987, refers to the Victorian age of steam-powered machines melded with the “punk”  attitude of non-conformity, creativity and unrestrained individuality.  This increasingly popular science-fiction genre is present in art, music, fashion, film and especially literature.

The family-friendly Steampunk Industrial Show runs January 22 through 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  at Renninger's Antique Center, 20651 US 441, Mount Dora.  Watch the local entertainment calendar for the upcoming schedule of events.  Parking and admission are free.

Once again, Mount Dora will play host to Central Florida's massive and eclectic shopping experience on January 14, 15 and 16.

Three times a year  Renningers Antique Center organizes the Antique Extravaganza, the motherlode of vintage and antique shopping, set in the rambling hills under majestic oaks.

Make no mistake.  There is antique shopping and then there is the “Extravo” shopping.  That’s the term seasoned buyers and “pickers” use for the event that boasts over 800 dealers during its three-day  run spread on a scenic portion of a 130-acre property.

Dealers from across the U.S. descend on Mount Dora to offer a tremendous variety of vintage finds and fine antiques at every price.   Eager collectors, decorators and vintage shoppers from across Florida show up in droves to uncover treasures and find the best deals.

Extravos only happen the third Friday, Saturday and Sunday of November, January  and February.  Shoppers and the curious can roam the hills from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.   Friday admission costs more, but eager shoppers get first dibs on hard-to-find treasures.  Sunday shoppers get better bargains, but some vendors do pack up early.

Parking is free.  Admission is $10 on Friday, $6 on Saturday, and only $4 on Sunday.  A three-day pass is $15.  Renninger’s Antique Center is located at 20651 US Hwy 441.

Move over Sundance.  Mount Dora will once again play host to the 16th Annual Central Florida Film Festival (CENFLO) kicking off on January 21.

Movie lovers are expected to trek from near and far to the small town known for its quaint downtown and low rolling hills for the three-day festival of film screenings on January 21 through 23.  The international festival will screen comedies, dramas, suspense, horror and adventure.  All screenings will be held at the 12-screen Epic Theatre located at 2300 Spring Harbor Boulevard, just off U.S. Highway 441.

After films were submitted to the festival for consideration, they underwent a rigorous judging process on specific criteria.   Films with the highest grades from judges were accepted into the event and CENFLO will select the winner from four finalists.  The Mount Dora Mayor's Choice Award will also be awarded again this year, plus it will be the first year the festival will present the Hollywood Luminary Award for outstanding contribution to film. The inaugural recipient is legendary comic book artist and writer George Perez for his impact on how superhero movies have impacted cinema over the past decade. More details of the award’s presentation will be announced via the festival’s social media sites closer to the event.

CENFLO will also have fun and informative panel discussions with industry professionals, nightly networking parties at the theater, and a closing night award ceremony.

The popular festival has come a long way since its debut year in 2005 at the Osceola Center for the Arts.  In 2013 it was named among the "Top 25 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee" by Movie Maker Magazine.

Individual movie tickets are $10 with daily movie passes costing $35, which allows access to all screenings on that day.  Die-hard movie lovers can opt for a $85 V.I.P. pass for access to all films for the entire festival.  Tickets and more information will be posted on CENFLO’s website.

Recipes Requested for new Mount Dora Cookbook

1/1/2022

Picture
Everybody has one -- a favorite family recipe or one that garners rave reviews at every gathering.  Whatever the tasty dish, Mount Dora residents, teachers, and businesses are being asked to submit their best recipe to be included in the city’s upcoming cookbook.

The book of delicacies will be sold at downtown’s Barrel of Books and Games to raise funds for Mount Dora High School’s long-overdue stadium improvements.  An anonymous local merchant donated the cost of the printing, so 100% of the proceeds will go to improving the time-battered stadium.

"We're having fun engaging a broad range of residents, local merchants and Mount Dora High supporters," says MDHS alumna Trella Mott, chair of the MDHS Stadium Improvement Project Committee.

Recipes for tasty appetizers, entrees and side dishes, as well as fresh salads, desserts and cocktails are being sought.  Kids can also submit a favorite recipe for the Kids’ Favorites section. The deadline to submit recipes is Monday, January 31.

With a focus on celebrating the high school's 100th anniversary (1921-2021), the cookbook will also include bits of history and photos related to Mount Dora and the stadium, which originally opened in 1962 as the Mount Dora Community Bowl.  The local cookbook will also be sprinkled with words of wisdom by Bobbie Clement, a beloved teacher who guided MDHS students for four decades.

Recipes can be submitted either by emailing them to [email protected], or mailed  to Mount Dora Recipes, 128 W. Fourth Ave., Mount Dora, FL 32757.   The cookbooks will be $18.95 and pre-ordering is encouraged. Click here for more information.
