MOUNT DORA MARINA HOSTS DRIVE-IN MOVIE WITH A TWIST

Remember the days of pulling up the car to the drive-in to catch the latest flick?

One local business is inviting folks to revisit those old-school years, albeit with a little twist.

This is the fourth year Mount Dora Boating Center and Marina, home to the largest private holiday light display in Central Florida,  will host the free Christmas Movie Night on the Water. The event is  just like a 1960’s drive-in except it’s Lake Dora .

Boats can drop anchor in Simpson Cove on December 16 to watch “Home Alone” on an 18-foot screen beginning at dusk. The sound will be available by tuning into FM radio 90.9.

buzzin':  AN INTERVIEW WITH STEPHEN CURRENCE

12/1/2017

Picture
Appearances can be deceiving. Stephen Currence does not look anything like a vagabond musician.  His guy-next-door good looks with the disarming dimples conceal one of the area’s best vocal talents.

Years ago Currence played at Open Mic Night at Eduardo’s Station, which was home base for many local musicians in its heydey.  He’s come a long way since his first paid gig at Tom & Jerry’s bar in Winter Park in 2001.  Currence began playing gigs in downtown Mount Dora in 2008 at a laundromat-turned-restaurant, Chew Chew Express, that sat next to the train tracks.   Read more

SANTA TO TOUR MOUNT DORA WITH LIGHTS & SIRENS DEC. 5-7

12/1/2017

Every year Santa and Mrs. Claus visit Mount Dora neighborhoods with a few of their friends.

Santa covers a lot of ground touring the city, so he relies on the help of Mount Dora's Police and Fire Departments.   The sound of loud sirens fill the evening air as Santa and his festive motorcade travel throughout the city.

Mrs. Claus reports Santa loves Christmas in Mount Dora, so his 2017 tour schedule covers a lot of the city.  As a result, his arrival times can be unpredictable, but his elves assured Mount Dora Buzz that it's always worth any wait that might occur.

Santa's tour schedule is from 5:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. in the following neighborhoods:

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 5:  WEST ROUTE
Santa and his motorcade will be touring the downtown when he will stop at Donnelly Park.  Then he will travel through the neighborhoods west of Donnelly Street.  Then from 11th Avenue through to Old Eustis Road and Dogwood Mountain.   Following those areas, he will travel to the area of Eudora Road and visit the communities and retail stores along the way.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER  6: EAST ROUTE
Touring the downtown and then traveling through neighborhoods east of Donnelly, between Limit Avenue and Crane Avenue  (Northeast and Southeast neighborhoods)

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7: NORTH ROUTE
Santa will be touring the downtown, then all communities north of US Hwy 441 including:  Lakes of Mount Dora, Lancaster at Loch Leven, Loch Leven, Country Club of Mount Dora and Summerbrooke.

Santa cannot provide the times he will be at certain areas, because he stops to visit kids and families along the way.   However, his motorcade will make sure everyone hears him coming.

Due to Santa's busy schedule, he can't tour every neighborhood, but will be in one nearby to everyone.  He encourages residents to listen for the loud sirens and pull over to watch for him.  Click here to see video of Santa touring downtown Mount Dora.  Get the list of other local holiday events here.
