The sight of hardware spread over the counter and a crew busy at work, might bring expectations of a hefty home improvement bill. That's not the case at Mount Dora Olive Oil Company.
Doug Thompson, the store's owner, is in the process of creating a large piece of contemporary, industrial art constructed of 13,824 painted bolts that transform into a brightly hued lighthouse image. The wall art was conceptualized in 2011 by Thompson, a professional photographer and furniture craftsman. He began buying bolts in bulk and having them painted in 2012. Later he had a board custom drilled with a hole for each bolt. The goal was to create a fun and interactive art project which will be completed by June's Art Stroll in downtown Mount Dora.
Currently, Thompson is busy preparing to open his second olive oil store on the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs, but he still plans to have time to change the bolt art image every four months if time permits. This art, along with his landscape photography and industrial furniture, is available to view at 351 N. Donnelly Street, downtown.
