GET LOST IN MOUNT DORA'S CORN MAZE

9/25/2016

Getting lost has never been so fun.   The annual corn maze at rural Long & Scott Farm opens October. 1.   The popular seasonal attraction brings in an estimated 1500-2000 weekend visitors to the Mount Dora area.

Designs are cut into pathways in the 7-acre corn maze to convey this year's theme, "Florida Grown."   Visitors that dare can enter the maze and attempt to find their way out of the tall and twisting corn field (see image of previous year).  No need to panic--it’s a friendly day of fun, and before an anxiety attack kicks in, participants can raise a flag to surrender and be promptly rescued.

There is also a 1-acre corn maze for smaller guests, plus a 3-acre live tree maze.  The popular attraction also includes an oversized jumping pillow, a 60-foot super slide, a kids' zip line, a picnic area, fishing, a new playground, hayrides, a country market, an obstacle course and a tot lot play area for younger kids.

Scott's Maze Adventure is open on Saturdays (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sundays (1 to 5 p.m.) between Oct. 1 and Dec. 11.   It is recommended to get there early to avoid long lines.    The farm is located at 26216 County Road 448A, Mount Dora.

Large groups can make reservations for admission on Tuesdays through Fridays.  Admission is $12 for ages 4 and up. Children under 4 are free.

ADULTS COLOR INSIDE THE LINES IN MOUNT DORA

9/21/2016

It's been a relaxing trend. Coloring, yes coloring, made a splash with adults.

Coloring books with sophisticated designs were created for adults yearning for an easy creative outlet with no rules.

The relaxing fad made its way downtown with Home and Garden Treasures and Barrel of Books and Games among the local shops that introduced adult coloring books into their product mix over the years.

Barrel of Books and Games hosts a popular, free adult coloring night  when participants can bring their own wine or beer.  It's a fun night to get together with friends or to come stag and meet new ones.  Coloring books are always available for purchase.  The next coloring night is Oct. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Another downtown venue for those wanting to partake in the stress-free endeavor is the Modernism Museum.  This fall it's hosting an hour of adult coloring on Serenity Saturdays at 11 a.m.  The cost is five dollars.

MOUNT DORA GETS GASTRO PUB FOR A NIGHT

9/20/2016

Craft beer lovers are finally getting some foodie cred.  A new event, Mount Dora Brew & Chew, will feature 5 tapas-style courses paired with complementing small-batch beers.  The pop-up gastro pub experience is expected to appeal to a cross-section of foodies and beer aficionados.

The dinner event on September 28 is hosted by PIzzAmore and deviates from their Italian fare by offering a more sophisticated menu.

Mount Dora Brew and Chew is a natural progression of the city’s growing recognition as a destination for craft beer lovers.  This seeds of this reputation were sown six years ago with the opening of Mount Dora Brewing, a popular local micro-brewery and restaurant.  The brewery's opening was followed by the unorthodox craft beer bar, Mermaid Juice, which quickly earned a big following and reputation among craft beer enthusiasts throughout the state.

The area further cemented its place as a craft beer destination when Bru Tap House  hosted the first Craft Beer Festival in downtown Tavares.  Mount Dora Brew & Chew is the first dinner event to feature food pairings with its beers and is expected to be a quarterly event.

The event starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $40 and seating is limited.  Call 352-383-0092 for more info.  For the best local places for craft beer, click here.

GLAMPERS FLOCK TO MOUNT DORA THIS WEEKEND

9/15/2016

Not everyone is a happy camper.  Cold showers and port-a-potties aren't everyone's idea of a day in paradise.

Enter 'glamping', a hybrid of glamour and camping with amenities that aren't typical of camping's discomforts.  It's become the travel trend of providing affordable escape and adventure without getting too much dirt under anyone's fingernails.

Now glampers have a destination in Mount Dora.  A few times every year, Renningers Antique Market, opens its rolling hills to everything from fanciful retro campers to mac-daddy modern RVs.   September 16-19,  Glampers can partake in traditional camping activities like camp fires, smores, live music and activities, plus meander about Renningers Vintage RV and Hot Road show and shop the antique market for obscure treasures.

Enthusiasts of recreational vehicles can tour vintage RVs and take home bragging rights for the Annual Best Vintage RV.  There are also contests for Best Vendor Display and Best Campsite.
