"Planes, Tunes & BBQ" rocks Tavares on March 1 & 2

The smell of savory BBQ combines with high-flying seaplanes at the 16th Annual Planes, Tunes & BBQ on March 1 and 2 at waterfront Wooton Park in downtown Tavares. The family friendly event will have free entertainment including an air show, seaplane contests, a drone show, live music and various vendors.  Seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs. Parking is available in the nearby parking garage located at 200 N. Sinclair Ave.

The festivities kick off Friday evening with live music, barbecue, and various other food and merchandise vendors. Reece, a Central Florida singer/songwriter, will open the show with his unique country sound, HIs performance will be followed by Kings County, a band with an edgy blend of modern country and classic rock favorites.
 
On Saturday, seasoned seaplane pilots will compete in Seaplane-A-Palooza flying contests, including the crowd-favorite. Melon Bomb Drop. Following the seaplane events, several live music acts will take to the stage, followed by a drone show and wrapping up with a performance by War Hippies.  See the full line up for the two-day event below:

ENTERTAINMENT BIOS FOR FRIDAY ENTERTAINMENT
KINGS COUNTY 
Originally from Long Island, New York the Orlando-based band creates hard-hitting rock n' roll with infectious hooks. Inspired by an eclectic combination of The Beatles and Herb Alpert, their songs blend edgy hard rock with strong melodies. The band's music is somewhat reminiscent of 90s hard rock artists but with a modern twist.
 
REECE GUSTAFSON
Reece is a country musician originally from Central Florida, however his unique, new country sound has given him a following in several states.  His impressive stage presence includes seamlessly transitioning between guitar and keyboard. Reece has performed at many festivals and recently played at the Rhythm on Ruby Festival. Reece's most recent original release, Back to You, is a blend of new country and southern rock.

WAR HIPPIES
These combat veterans, who also share a passion for writing and performing music, joined forces in 2022.  Using their platform as artists, their mission is to propagate peace, love, and safeguard the freedoms of people around the world.
 
THE WEATHERED SOULS
Formed in the small town of Greenville, Texas, The Weathered Souls are foraging the path of modern-day rock n’ roll, meshing the classic rock with heavier, electric elements. Over many studio sessions, The Weathered Souls connected on their love of classic rock bands such as AC/DC, but enjoy bringing their youthful twist and energy into this perennial, and ‘weathered’ genre. 
 
J ALAN SIX BAND
The band’s music is heavily influenced by the great country stars of the past, including George Jones, George Strait, Jamey Johnson, and Trace Adkins, to name a few. J Alan recorded his first country album in Nashville with a collection of songs written by award-winning songwriters, including one of the founding members of Sawyer Brown, Bobby Randall. 
 
DALLAS TYLER
Dallas Tyler was born and raised in rural Apopka. Growing up, his parents introduced him to local bands on the weekends.His biggest inspirations are Patrick Gibson, Rob Nichols, and Brooks Vaughan of Hayfire Band, all local artists.

Mount Dora's Highland Athletic Games attracts tough competitors

As part of the Mount Dora Scottish Highland Festival, the city will once again host rigorous competitions on Saturday, February 17, in downtown’s Evans Park on the waterfront.

Teams of impressively strong men and women in kilts will compete for bragging rights in strenuous Scottish events like braemar (the carrying of a large and heavy stone), the fire truck pull, a sheaf toss, ax throwing, caber toss, and more.  

The events begin at 10 a.m. and are expected to continue to approximately 5 p.m.  At press time an event schedule hadn’t been published, so spectators should get there early to ensure watching as many fun competitions as possible.

The Mount Dora Scottish Highland Festival, which runs February 15 to 18, also includes traditional Scottish music and dancing, vendor tents, bagpipes, plus food and drinks available for purchase in Donnelly Park. Tickets are $20 at the gate and allow admittance on all days.  Onlookers downtown will be able to see the Heritage Clan Parade from the street starting at noon on Saturday.

A shuttle service is available Saturday, February 17, at First Baptist Church of Mount Dora Parking lot located at 1000 East 1st Avenue, as well as the vacant lot at 900 Lincoln Avenue.  The shuttle from the Lincoln Avenue location will also be available on Sunday.

Eustis to celebrate GeorgeFest with events throughout February

The City of Eustis is gearing up to celebrate George Washington’s birthday with lots of festive activities scheduled in February, kicking off with the Running of the Georges 5k on February 5.   This year marks the 122nd time the city will gather its community, neighboring cities and visitors to honor the country’s first president.  GeorgeFest is the ​longest running celebration of its kind in Florida and the second longest running in the entire U.S.

In addition to country music concerts featuring Tracy Bryd and Drake White, there will also be fireworks, a fishing tournament, a parade, and other family friendly activities throughout the month. The GeorgeFest carnival opens February 22 and continues through February 25. Get the complete schedule of events below:

Mount Dora Arts Festival draws top artists on February 3 & 4

Historic downtown Mount Dora will transform its New England-style charm into a sea of vibrant art on February 3 and 4, when hundreds of the United States’ best artists show their works at the 49th annual Mount Dora Arts Festival.   

The juried festival, organized by Mount Dora Center for the Arts, has been ranked among the top 20 art festivals in the country and provides art lovers the opportunity to shop for fine arts, artisan jewelry, and pottery created by approximately 300 of the most talented professional artists from all over the United States.

Downtown Mount Dora’s many diverse restaurants will be open to satisfy the culinary cravings of visitors, plus all of the historic district’s many unique shops will be open for the best in retail therapy opportunities.

The free festival is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.  Visitors who arrive early may be able to find free street parking within walking distance.  Other patrons may find a space at nearby private parking lots that charge a fee, or opt for the park-and-ride shuttles located at 900 Lincoln Avenue.  Handicapped parking is available behind City Hall at 510 N. Baker Street, but space are limited and go quickly. 

Due to large crowds and narrow streets, pets are strongly discouraged for their own well being and that of other visitors.

“Off the Beaten Path” Art Tour returns to Lake County February 10 & 11

Lake County artists will once again offer a peek into their private working studios to visitors during the annual Off the Beaten Path Florida Arts Tour.

The local self-guided tour of over a dozen participating studios takes place on February 10 and 11 and features 18 selected artists across Mount Dora, Tavares, Eustis, Leesburg and Weirsdale.

Visitors to the studios can watch demonstrations, enjoy light refreshments, and shop for unique and original works of art.  Some of the artists’ works displayed include paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photography, jewelry, and printmaking.

On each day of the tour, all studios will be open free of charge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Here are the artists and studio addresses in Lake County
