A new event is slated in uptown Mount Dora on August 20. Uptown Saturday Night will highlight an area of the city often overlooked by resident and entrepreneurs. Read more

The proposed Tav-Dora Trail, a bike and pedestrian trail that would connect downtown Mount Dora and downtown Tavares to each other, as well as to a larger Florida trail system, is once again on the forefront. The owners of the rail-bed property have agreed to sell the portion of railbed from Sorrento to Tavares for $18,500,000. If Lake County agrees to the terms of the deal, the County, along with the Cities of Mount Dora and Tavares, will have to commit an additional $5 million to buy out the current lease of the rail bed. The three local governments have jointly applied for a grant to help fund a portion of the project. If you have an opinion on the trail, include it in the monthly Buzz Poll here.

Lake County Schools (LCS) resume August 10. In an effort to keep local parents informed, Mount Dora Buzz compiled a list of the eight things parents should know about Mount Dora school safety, and included an incident comparison chart of all LCS middle schools, as well as Mount Dora High School. Read more Meanwhile, in other LCS news, Mount Dora High School achieved a significant accomplishment last month when it became the top-rated high school in all of Lake County! Way to go, Hurricanes!

In case you missed the Buzz's article in July, Wooton Wonderland, the wooden playground in downtown Tavares' Wooton Park, is currently closed during construction of a new playground. You can read the article and see the renderings here. Meanwhile, in Mount Dora, construction has begun on the improvements to Cauley Lott Park. The project is expected to take four to five months.

Mount Dora's newest eatery and watering hole has opened to rave reviews. The steak tacos, beet salad and and berry empanada dessert were our faves at Eden Abbey Brewing Community.

A new restaurant featuring traditional American fare opened in downtown Eustis. The Brick and Barrel Kitchen on Magnolia also has a full bar and nightly happy hour. Read more

Speaking of barrels...downtown Mount Dora's popular book store, Barrel of Books & Games, is expanding. The independent retailer will be moving nearby and will triple its current size. Read more

The City of Mount Dora is operating without key permanent management during the current hurricane season. These storms can wreak havoc on city roads, utilities, emergency services and infrastructure, so hurricane season arguably may not be the time for any Florida city to be without them. Read more

Soon City of Mount Dora residents will receive their TRIM Notice from the Tax Collector. The TRIM will show a higher 6.1000 millage rate. However, the final rate will be lower, barring a costly unexpected disaster, like a hurricane. The 2022-2023 fiscal year starts October 1 and the current millage of 5.9603 could be adopted again by the time the budget is finalized.

It's summer in Florida and the temps are sweltering, but our local area has just what you need to cool off. Make time to take a refreshing dip in the waters of the many nearby natural springs. Here's a list of the seven best.

It's that time of year again! Mount Dora residents interested in giving back to their community can now throw their hats into the ring to serve on the City Council. In recent years, many council seats have gone unopposed, so now is a great time to get involved and give back. Here's list of ten quick things to know to when considering a run for Mount Dora City Council and a link to the paperwork to file. Read more

Bring on the parties! Independence Day celebrations are this weekend. As is the local tradition, the cities of Mount Dora, Tavares and Eustis spread the festivities over 3 days so residents can enjoy all of the celebrations and fireworks. First up is Eustis with its celebration in Ferran Park on July 1. Get the complete schedule of events here. Next is Freedom on the Waterfront in Mount Dora and you can get details on that event here. Tavares has a cool new watering hole The recent opening of The Argonaut Bar & Lounge has provided a fun new experience in the heart of downtown. Read more

Yada Yada Pottery is expected to move in August from its current second floor location on Donnelly Street to a larger and more accessible location at 133 E. 5th Avenue where it will continue to offer its popular ceramics classes, pottery painting, macrame classes, and artisan gift shop.

The Dona Vista Market, a community marketplace near Eustis, opened a new art gallery on weekends featuring local artists.

C.J. Seafood Company in downtown Eustis closed in June, according to its Facebook page. A "for rent" sign was placed in the large space, so stay tuned for what's next. Meanwhile, under new ownership, Magnolia Wine Bar, also in downtown Eustis, has updated its offerings and shortened its name to just Magnolia.

A traffic light at the intersection of Lakes of Mount Dora Blvd. and SR 44 has been approved by FDOT and design work has begun. The State agency is streamlining the multi-year process into 6 to 8 months due to safety concerns and hopes that the traffic signal will be installed shortly after the new signal at Britt Road and SR 44.

Last month, Mount Dora's popular Police Chief resigned and his official last day was June 10. Here is a timeline of events gleaned from public records that led up to the Chief's voluntary departure. Interim Police Chief Gibson now brings his extensive experience to run the department.

This month local coffee lovers and carnivores get a whole lot happier. Foxtail Coffee will soon open its second location in Mount Dora and offer a variety of specialty coffees and teas. Read more Meanwhile, Longhorn Steakhouse submitted a preliminary proposal to the City of Mount Dora for a location at 17020 U.S. 441 in front of Walmart next to the bank. Mount Dora is about to get even more of a good thing! In order to expand its offerings, watch for Walk in the Woods, the popular outdoor apparel store, to open a second location downtown soon next to Checkered Moon on 4th Avenue.

Sadly, The Cellar Door Wine Bar, the friendly and cozy watering hole on Donnelly Street, closed on May 30. The small bar was located inside Papilio and also featured a convenient walk-up counter for passersby. We wish Cary and Devon the very best in their next adventure.

Downtown Eustis lost one if its popular bars and eateries last month when Tillie's Tavern permanently closed the doors of their large new space. Stay tuned for updates of what will eventually fill that historic building on Magnolia Street.

Don't miss the last big Mount Dora event of the season on May 7 when the spring Craft Show comes to shady Gilbert Park. The one-day event hosted by Specialty Pop-Events features crafters, artists, food and other vendors under the oaks from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It's that time of year again to show your favorite local businesses some big love by voting in the Best of Mount Dora Awards. The annual awards give bragging rights to all types of businesses including restaurants, bars, shops and more. Get your ballot here.

Spring has sprung and it's hard not to miss to the gorgeous wildflowers blanketing local fields and roadsides. If you're looking for the best spots to enjoy the blooms, here's a list of nearby country roads to drive to enjoy the colorful season. Read more. Another great place to see wildflowers right now is the Noonan Butterfly Garden at the W.T. Bland Library in Mount Dora.

As the U-pick blueberry season winds down later in May, the local blackberry season is just heating up at local farms. That berry U-pick season is open at Bear Tracks Blackberry Farm in Eustis which sells blackberries for $5 per pound on Tuesdays through Thursdays and weekends at $6 per pound. Blue Bayou Farms in Yalaha sells them them for $6 per pound daily.

Some new apartments may soon be available in Mount Dora. Parkview Apartments is a proposed project on Grandview Street on the vacant land across from Gilbert park (read more) and Bristol Park Apartments with 300 units has been proposed off U.S. 441.

Last October a fire engulfed the Segway store in Mount Dora. The extensive repairs to the building are nearing completion, so the business should be returning to its original downtown digs soon.

As promised, downtown Mount Dora's Edge Coffee reopened in April. The new owners are keeping the same name and vibe, but did add a cool interior wall mural.

After an extensive buildout, Wave Asian Bistro finally moved into its new location last month. The sushi restaurant didn't move far. Its new space is on the ground floor of the same building with its entrance along the Royellou Lane near 3rd Avenue.

There's no such thing as too much of a good thing. Magic Tea Market, the popular boba tea shop and Asian snack market in downtown Mount Dora is planning to open a second location on U.S. 441 near Panera Bread and Office Depot this summer.

Watch for Maw's Mountain Moonshine to open on the corner of Alexander Street and 4th Avenue in downtown Mount Dora after the buildout is complete. Stay tuned to Mount Dora Buzz's Instagram for more details.

Mount Dora City staff and the City Council are hopeful about being awarded a major grant to start the Tav-Dora Trail project that would connect Mount Dora and Tavares to a larger trail system. The project would be funded by the grant and through a partnership with Lake County, Mount Dora and Tavares. The trail is projected to be an economic driver for both cities. The parties expect to know about the grant decision in October.

This month brings the return of Mount Dora's Vintage Garden Show and ripe local blueberries. However, the annual Planes Trains & BBQ scheduled for downtown Tavares with two days of great food, an air show, and lively country music concerts has been postponed due to forecasted inclement weather. Read more

The annual Vintage Garden Show returns to Mount Dora with everything green thumbs need to get inspired to plant their gardens or decorate them. Read more. Meanwhile, to protect your landscaping, be on the lookout for the young Eastern Lubbers that are now hatching. They will decimate your plants once the ravenous insects mature. Read more

Get ready, berry lovers! Lake County's local blueberry season just kicked off and continues into May. Don't put off a fun day outdoors picking fresh blueberries while the temperatures are perfect. Here's a list of the top three local U-pick blueberry farms to visit. Read more

Kudos to the Mount Dora businesses, residents and visitors who donated over $2,000 to World Central Kitchen to help feed Ukrainian refugees. If you're interested, you can help, too. Get more info

One of the many benefits of small-town family life happens this month in Mount Dora with the return of its annual community Easter Egg Hunt at W.T. Bland Library. Kids of all ages and abilities are invited to take part and meet the Easter Bunny and get a free book. Read more

After a recommendation from the City's Building Advisory Committee, created late last year, Mount Dora City Council is expected to discuss downtown building heights, as well as whether to put the issue before voters this November. The discussion is expected to happen at its upcoming public meeting on April 5 at City Hall at 6 p.m.

A fabulous new Mexican restaurant, La Perla Tapatia, opened in Eustis in April. Some of its authentic yet uncommon offerings distinguish it from the ubiquitous TexMex spots. Read more

Don't panic if you noticed Mount Dora's Starbucks doors were locked. It's a temporary closure for its remodeling, so your double latte will be available again soon.

Visitors to downtown Eustis are in for a new treat. Mystic Ice Cream recently introduced its creamy, "spiked"' ice cream to the area when it opened recently. The new shop typically offers 32 handmade flavors, some with booze and some without. Read more

A new Culver's has been proposed for vacant land on U.S. 441 in Mount Dora. The proposal is currently in the City's development review process. The Wisconsin-based burger chain is known for its frozen custard in addition to its popular butter burgers, cheese curds and sandwiches. Stay tuned to Mount Dora Buzz's Facebook page for updates.

Last month, Mount Dora City Council began discussing the downtown parking shortage again and is looking at short-term and long-term solutions including adding some new on-street parking spaces in the downtown core.

Lake Country School Board is seeking a referendum on the November ballot to ask voters to approve the continuation of a 0.75 mill tax that has been levied since 2019 to enhance school safety at public schools. Read more

From a kayakathon and vintage boat show, to a sailing regatta, this is the month that brings lots of fun on the water to Lake Dora.

Tavares kicks off the aquatic activities with the Vintage Boat Spring Regatta on March 19 and the drool-worthy Sunnyland Vintage Boat Festival on the last weekend of the month (read more). That same weekend, Mount Dora Sailing Regatta will take place with hundreds of sailboats gracing the water. Read more

At long last Mount Dora has officially selected a location for the overdue Northeast Community Resource Center. The recreation and resource facility will be located on the corner of Highland Street and Lincoln Avenue and will be walking distance for high school and middle school students.

Anyone looking for some high-energy retro entertainment will find it when Kashmir, a leading Led Zeppelin tribute band, takes the stage in downtown Mount Dora for a concert featuring the original band's classic rock hits and an electrifying show. More info

This month is a great time for a day trip to Blue Springs. The pristine State Park, beautiful on its own, is also the winter refuge to hundreds of West Indian manatees on chilly winter days. Read more

On March 19 & 20, Mount Dora will host its annual Spring Festival featuring hundreds of crafters and vendors lining the streets of historic downtown.

The occasional loud booms and rattling of local windows caused by blasts at the Navy's bombing range in the Ocala National Forest can catch Mount Dora residents off guard. Here are 10 things to know about the active Pinecastle Bombing Range.  Read more

Got shoes? Mount Dora has another drop-off location for Sole4Souls, the non-profit organization that puts unwanted shoes to good use, whether as disaster relief, or for homeless children or for those in need in the U.S. and developing countries.  Local folks can now also drop off shoes in the donation box at the register inside Barrel of Books and Games at 128 W. 4th Avenue open 12-4pm daily.

It's been a long time coming, but Shadrach's Fiery Furnace Pizza Company is making progress on its downtown Mount Dora location. Its outdoor eatery still isn't expected to open for a couple of months at the Donnelly Street site between 4th and 3rd Avenues. The pizza company is popular in Central Florida for its wood-fired pizzas and its new location will also offer appetizers, beer, wine, special events and more. Stay tuned to Mount Dora Buzz on Instagram for an opening date.

Speaking of pizza....downtown Eustis now has its own new Italian restaurant, Roma Pizza, which also dishes out pasta entrees, subs, wings and more. It's located at 1 N. Eustis Street behind City Hall and replaced Nalan Sultan, the delicious and authentic Turkish restaurant.

The Buzz is saddened to report the temporary closing of Edge Coffee downtown. The coffee house has become a popular hangout for locals due to its stellar cups of joe and welcoming atmosphere. The coffee-loving owners are expected to announce some big changes in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to Mount Dora Buzz's Facebook page for updates.

On March 7, Mount Dora City Council will have a public work session that includes addressing the City's parking situation. It was scheduled to be held last month, but that meeting ran long, so it was rescheduled to this month.

Lake County will be holding its local Household Hazardous Waste pickup on March 17 at Mount Dora's Walmart on U.S. 441. Lake County residents can drop off their leftover paint, pesticides, fluorescent lamps, and other items. Commercial drop off is not permitted at this event.

Florida is now in the peak of its festival season and this month kicks off with the 47th annual Mount Dora Arts Festival throughout the streets of downtown.  Read more

February is African American History Month and Tavares was to host an African American Heritage Festival in Wooton Park on February 5, but it was cancelled by the organizer (not the City of Tavares).   However, Lake County Museum of Art (LCMA) will celebrate the month with a special exhibit from February 4 to February 26.  There will be an opening reception on February 4 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, Eustis is also gearing up for its big annual GeorgeFest this month. The event is spread across multiple days and features a popular carnival, a parade and other family-friendly activities. Get the schedule of events here

The developer and property owner of the proposed Mount Dora Groves pulled their request to increase residential density for an expansive residential and commercial development that would have spanned both sides of U.S. 441 between Loch Leven Landing shopping center and the Country Club of Mount Dora. That means there is no longer an application with the city to develop that property.

Watch for My Peaceful Treasures, downtown Mount Dora's unique metaphysical boutique, to relocate to 5th Avenue in the former home of Papilio. The bigger space will allow more beautiful jewelry, clothing and gemstones.

Mount Dora's popular Olive Branch Mediterranean Restaurant changed hands last month. Although the community will miss former owners Jerry and Karen Vejseli, the new owner, Jeff Riesland, plans to keep a lot the same. Read more

Indie Markets are big throughout the country and until recently North Lake County residents would have to travel to DeLand or St. Petersburg to find one. Now a monthly indie market has taken root near Eustis and is hoping to grow during the season. Read more

Watch for a new Haystax Restaurant to open in Mount Dora on Old Highway 441 just east of Eudora Road in the same shopping center as the Post Office. The diner-style eatery will serve breakfast all day, every day starting at 6:30 a.m. They also have a lunch and dinner menu with American diner standards and a few Mexican options.

Lake County will be holding its local Household Hazardous Waste pickup on March 17 at Mount Dora's Walmart parking lot. Lake County residents can drop of their leftover paint, pesticides, fluorescent lamps, and other items. Commercial drop off is not permitted at this event.

Happy New Year! Mount Dora Buzz wishes you a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2022.

This month brings the exciting return of Central Florida Film Festival to Mount Dora. The annual international festival will screen over 150 films of all different types of genres. The three-day event takes place January 21 through 23. Read more

At the end of the month, the Florida Storytelling Festival returns to downtown Mount Dora with a bevy of events at the historic Lakeside Inn. You can find many of their events on the local entertainment calendar here.

A new 224-acre residential development has been proposed in Mount Dora which would span both sides of U.S. 441 between Loch Leven Landing shopping center and Limit Avenue. The developers of the proposed Simpson Grove development will have an information session on the project at Mount Dora Community Building on January 10 at 6 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend to learn more. The development is expected to be voted on at the January 18th Mount Dora City Council meeting.

Tavares Public Library's new 2,594-square-foot expansion will have its ribbon cutting on January 6. The multipurpose space includes a section for teens, accommodations for individual and group gatherings, and a programming and meeting area with interactive technology for collaboration. The library is located at 314 N New Hampshire Avenue.

Soon downtown Mount Dora will no longer be void of a pizza place. A new eatery featuring pizza made from scratch will open this month next to Pisces Rising. Back Porch Pizza Bar will also be concocting craft cocktails. Learn more about its other offerings and see some of its gourmet pizza menu here.

A new store, Regal Shops, offering all types of essential merchandise, recently opened in the Grandview Business District. In January, the store expects to serve burgers and wings from their commercial kitchen. Read more

Habitat for Humanity raised $90,000 to match the same amount from the Mount Dora's Northeast Community Redevelopment Agency (NECRA) to renovate and upgrade six homes in the neighborhood.

At its January 18 regular meeting, Mount Dora City Council will be voting on a large proposed development, Simpson Groves, that would significantly increase the city's population and tax base. The developer will host an information session on January 10th at the Mount Dora Community Building on 6th Avenue and Baker Street. The public is encouraged to attend. The session will start at 6 p.m.

Bring on the holidays! Don't miss any of the season's festive events, including visits from Santa. Check out the local Holiday Event Guide for Mount Dora, Tavares and Eustis here and get updates on Mount Dora Buzz's Facebook page.

It's hard to imagine a better Christmas town for kids than Mount Dora. For starters, there's an oversized musical Christmas Tree, a parade, a wonderland of twinkling lights, a special mailbox for letters to Santa that get answered personally by Mrs. Claus (get more info here), and he also visits the city's neighborhoods during his four-night Santa Tour. You can find the routes for each evening here. All of these festivities are topped off by the annual Christmas Walk on December 3 and Snow in the Park on December 11 (see calendar for details). No doubt, it's great to be a kid in Mount Dora!

Not to be overlooked is Tavares' big Christmas Celebration and Parade on December 4 from 3-9 pm. Head downtown for "ice-skating," food vendors, music and more.

No worries, adults aren't forgotten during the holiday season. Mount Dora's Annual Christmas Tour of Homes takes place on December 4 and 5. The self-driving tour starts at the Country Club of Mount Dora's clubhouse. On New Year's Eve, usher in 2022 at the annual New Year's Eve block party and fireworks at Sunset Park in downtown Mount Dora.

Visitors can now explore Mount Dora a new way. Mount Dora Marc's Walking Tours recently started helping people get the most of their Mount Dora visits. The two-hour tours start from Mount Dora Community Building and meander through downtown while the experienced guide shares the city's history and stories. Read more

The remarkable results of last month's election means times are changing in Mount Dora for at least the next few years. Mount Dora's new City Council members were sworn in on November 16. The three younger members represent a significant shift in the small town's government. Read more

Beer lovers can toast to a new microbrewery and cafe opening in uptown Mount Dora. The new spot will specialize in European-style brews and family-friendly, casual dining. Read more

Another new eatery, a pressed sandwich spot, opened in downtown Mount Dora. Delicias Cubanas is located on Alexander Street. Patrons can order Cuban sandwiches and other pressed sandwiches at the walk-up counter in the former space of Dukes Dogs.

The local event season is officially underway and later this month the holiday events kick off with Light Up Eustis. Tavares will host its on the first weekend in December. Mount Dora didn't respond to multiple requests for information about its traditional Light Up event. The unofficial word is the event is cancelled again this year. Meanwhile, you can find the local Holiday Event Guide for Mount Dora, Tavares and Eustis here and get updates on Mount Dora Buzz's Facebook page.

Drivers on the north end of Donnelly Street in Mount Dora can't help but notice the increased construction activity. A new pedestrian bridge and entrance feature is currently being built near the existing entrance signage. Read more and see the initial rendering here

The favorite annual event for landscapers and plant enthusiasts returns on November 13 and 14. Mount Dora Plant and Garden Fair features much more than hundreds of native and exotic plants. Read more

This year Mount Dora voters have been inundated with campaign materials which can make it hard to distinguish the candidates' positions. Mount Dora Buzz has an updated article on the 10 key similarities and differences between Mount Dora's candidates to make it a bit easier to differentiate them. Read more. Remember, Election Day is November 2 and polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Vintage and antique lovers will descend on Mount Dora on November 19 through 21 as the sprawling Antique Extravanganza returns to Renningers Antique Center. It's the perfect chance to find unique holiday gifts. Read more

November kicks of Mount Dora Buzz's annual Hoodie and Jacket Drive. This year we'll be collecting new and "like-new" items for local school kids ages 4 to 18 years old. If you're able, please go through your kids' closets for hoodies or jackets that they may have outgrown or shop the clearance racks to help the less fortunate kids in our community stay warm this winter. Our goal is always to give them warm clothing that they can take pride in wearing to school. Donations can be dropped off again at Barrel of Books & Games, located at 128 W. 4th Avenue in downtown Mount Dora, from November 3 to November 20. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Last month Segway of Central Florida, located in downtown Mount Dora, had a fire as a result of a lithium ion battery. Luckily, no one was injured. The retailer and service business has set up temporary digs across the street at 133 W. 5th Avenue while the original location is being restored.

Mount Dora is celebrating a big birthday this month! Mount Dora High School is having its Centennial Celebration on November 20. The event will feature favorite local musicians, food, silent auction and more. The party will benefit the school's stadium improvement project. Read more

Last month Plaza Guadalajara moved from its location on US 441 in Mount Dora to a nearby space near Fitness CF. The restaurant also changed its name to El Mezcal, which is the same as its Ocala location. Read more

Donut lovers have a new spot to get their fix. King Donuts (unaffiliated with Donut King in Clermont) opened on Old 441 just west of Eudora Road in Mount Dora. Read more

Mount Dora has a new location to donate items for resale that will benefit many local charities. Fifth Avenue Thrift Shoppe, part of First Methodist Church of Mount Dora, opened in October and will begin accepting more donations later this month. Among the charities to benefit from the sales of merchandise are Lake Cares Food Pantry, Carpenter's House and the Methodist Children's Home.

CITY HALL NEWS

In October, Mount Dora City Council approved the employment contract of Patrick Comiskey, who was hired as the new City Manager. Comiskey is in the process of moving to Mount Dora with his family and will begin on November 15th with an annual salary of $170,000.

Groundbreaking for the City's new Fire Station #35 took place on October 27. The station will be located on the north side of County Road 19A west of Eudora Rd.
