Paratroopers to drop from the skies over Lake Dora
Once again a vintage aircraft will make multiple passes over Lake Dora as former military jumpers descend into the water on May 10. The best vantage points are by boats anchored on the lake and along the shoreline in Wooton Park in downtown Tavares. Learn more

Mount Dora Corn Festival returns in May

New business to open in former One Flight Up space
The owners of the new Something Different Cafe are working hard to open their second downtown Mount Dora restaurant. The new eatery, Stairway2Donnelly, will open in the former space of One Flight Up Cafe after a complete renovation. The new cafe will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serve sandwiches, salads, appetizers, soups, flatbreads, plus specialty coffee drinks, beer and wine.

Local Mexican restaurant under new ownership
One of downtown Eustis' popular restaurants just changed hands. La Perla Tapacita temporarily closed during the transition of ownership, but is expected to reopen soon. We wish the former owners the very best and the new owners felicidades.

Former furniture store transitions to thrift shop in Eustis
The free-standing building that previously was home to Badcock Furniture, is now the location of a thrift store. Orphan's Rock Thrift Store relocated from its Mount Dora spot on Old U.S. Highway 441 to its new digs at 400 N. Grove Street in downtown Eustis. The thrift store's mission is to help fund orphanages across the globe and help support foster children.

Scent Bar finds new home in downtown Mount Dora
Crafted Scent Bar, a cozy place to create custom candles, is relocating from Eustis to downtown Mount Dora into a space next to Yada Yada Pottery. The Fifth Avenue storefront will offer DIY candle-making experiences after creating your own unique scent. The Eustis location will still be open until the Mount Dora location opens which is anticipated for late June. Stay tuned!

Mount Dora adopts long-term plan to address growth and water capacity
The City of Mount Dora will reach its capacity to provide wastewater (sewer) treatment once already-approved developments are built out over the next several years. Last month Mount Dora City Council adopted a 20-year plan to add capacity and deal with rigorous EPA requirements for removing chemicals, including nitrogen and phosphorus. Grants and low-interest loans will be a priority to achieve this capital-intensive plan. There will be more updates and discussions on this topic over the upcoming months and years.

Plant & Pottery Festival at Far Reach
A fun new event will take place in rural Tavares on April 13. Lake County Plant & Pottery Festival will feature original handmade pottery, plant vendors, pottery demonstrations, u-pick blueberries, hayrides, plus a DJ and food trucks at Far Reach Ranch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The former cattle ranch is located at 1255 S. Art Center has new second home in Mount Dora
After an impressive transformation, Mount Dora Center for the Arts will soon open its new building in uptown, in addition to its long-time downtown location. The new building provides the ability to expand art programs for all ages in the community, however the change hasn't come without drama. Read more

Iconic Downtown Mount Dora Café Closes
After almost 20 years and countless memories, One Flight Up Café permanently closed in downtown Mount Dora on March 31 after its landlord, CFL Properties, opted not to renew its lease. We wish Roger, Judy, and Andrea the very best in their next chapters. Another food service business is expected to open in the space, but nothing has been finalized. Stay tuned.

Local Jewelry Designer to Expand Into Larger Space
Watch for Jewelry by TFC in downtown Mount Dora to expand and move into the 4th Avenue space that The Wow Factory will vacate at the end of April. The local jewelry designer, currently located inside Papilio, will continue to grow her original line and offer a wider selection of complementary items.

Tavares Dog House opts to close its doors
After four years in downtown Tavares, Tavares Dog House made the decision to close its doors on April 1. The lively sports bar on the ground floor of the Citrus Hotel has been popular with residents and visitors to the city's Entertainment District. Locally-owned coffeehouse preps to open in heart of Eustis

After years in a corner location in Tavares, Deli Llama has relocated to a space inside Mount Dora Marketplace. Known for their delicious sandwiches, salads and crafted beverages, the new spot is destined to be a new favorite lunch spot downtown.

Reality Show revamps Mount Dora bar
One of Mount Dora's watering holes briefly closed last month while the reality show, Bar Rescue, transformed the bar and worked out some of its kinks. Big Dog Saloon, located on SR 19A, has since reopened to the relief of its regulars.

In their effort to advocate for a federal grant to help bring the multi-use Wekiva Trail to fruition, officials from Lake County, the Trust for Public Land, the City of Mount Dora, and the City of Tavares teamed up to host State and Federal delegates. The proposed transformational trail would connect the two cities, and promote outdoor recreation throughout the area.

For over six decades, Long & Scott Farm has been a popular Lake County farm known for its fresh Zellwood Sweet Corn and, in recent years, as a Central Florida destination for agri-tourism with its sprawling corn maze attraction. One of Central Florida's last big festivals of the season takes place in downtown Mount Dora on March 15 and 16. The event runs from noon to 6 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month through May and then resumes again in October. The check-in table is located at 100 E. Ruby Street.

Downtown Mount Dora vacancies provide opportunities to new businesses
Finding commercial space to lease in downtown Mount Dora can be challenging, but after Maw's Mercantile, the Segway store, and Vyntage Goods recently departed, more retail space has become available along 5th Avenue, as well as Alexander Street.

A locally-owned coffee shop to open in downtown Eustis
A cozy spot tucked between the historic State Theatre and the local brewery will soon be home to a new community-centric coffee shop set to open this spring in downtown Eustis. Watch for One Thirteen Coffeehouse to open at 113 N Bay Street. Stay tuned for an opening date here.

Favorite downtown Mount Dora shop's owner to retire
After almost 14 years at its current 4th Avenue location and five at its previous 5th Avenue location, The Wow Factory will be closing its doors at the end of April, so its owner, John Theis, can retire. The popular store earned "Best of Mount Dora" awards for several consecutive years, and is known for its fun and irreverent merchandise. We wish John, and his long-time employee Lynne, fun and relaxing retirements.

Surgical Center of Mount Dora permanently closed
North Lake County lost one option for patients' surgeries after the permanent closure of Surgery Center of Mount Dora, the freestanding, physician-owned facility on Lake Center Drive. Patients still have nearby facilities that include the hospitals in Tavares, Leesburg and Apopka.

Mount Dora and Lake County to partner to find source of odor
According to the City of Mount Dora, the source of the foul odor is not its Waste Water Plant #2, so now it's focused on identifying the source (or sources) and to split the cost of finding it with Lake County. Each entity will pay $135,000 to fund a study which should be complete by mid-June.

Construction slated for new community center in Northeast Community
The construction of Mount Dora's new 31,100 square-foot Community Resource and Recreation Center on the corner of Lincoln Avenue and North Simpson Street will begin later this year and will be funded by the Northeast Community Redevelopment Agency. The need for such a facility in the area dates back 50 years.

Pickleball gets upgrades in Donnelly Park
The wait is over! Mount Dora's throngs of pickleball players can return to Donnelly Park now that the new courts are complete and the old courts have been resurfaced. This is just one phase of improvements to the park. Read more

Eustis brings six-story duck to downtown
The world’s largest rubber duck will debut at Georgefest on February 15-22. The oversized photo-op stands more than six stories tall and weighs over 11 tons. Duke, as it's named, will be on display for the duration of the annual festval celebrating George Washington's birthday.

Local Black history recognized during African American History Month
The story of Mount Dora isn't complete without recognizing the impact Black residents had on the city's progress. At the end of the Civil War, freed slaves left Georgia and other Southern states, searching for a safe haven and a place to prosper. Mount Dora, unnamed and undeveloped in the late 1800s, was one of those places. Read more

A cheerful new lunch cafe, Little Something Different, is preparing to open in the former space of Let's Do Lunch on Donnelly Street in downtown. We're still awaiting word back on the menu, projected opening date and hours, but keep an eye out for it.

Congratulations to Butcher's Nook in Mount Dora
The delicious artisanal sammies crafted in downtown Mount Dora will soon be available to more lucky sandwich connoisseurs. The Butcher's Nook is expanding with a second location at Hall's on Fifth, Apopka's first food hall. The high-end sandwich shop and premium meat counter opened over a year ago on Alexander Street next to Maggie's Attic in Mount Dora.

Mount Dora Police launch new bike patrol
Mount Dora Police Department launched a new bike patrol initiative, a community-focused program designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community while improving public safety. The bike patrol, with its specially-equipped mountain bikes and officers with yellow helmets, will expand coverage in areas that are challenging to navigate with standard vehicles, including downtown, residential neighborhoods, and busy public spaces. The bike patrol can respond quicker and engage more directly, while proactively deterring crime in those areas.

Mount Dora eyes potential parking improvements
In an development that would likely draw cheers from residents, business owners and visitors, the City Council discussed the potential availability of two privately-owned parking lots in downtown to help ease the downtown Mount Dora parking issue. First, the City will need to revise an old ordinance that effectively prevents the private lots from being used for public parking. Stay tuned.

Mount Dora lights display to remain up through January
Just in case you didn't make it to downtown Mount Dora before Christmas, or you just want to soak up more holiday cheer, most of the area's lights, including those in Donnelly Park, will remain up through the end of January.

Good news on the Wekiva Rail-Trail Extension
CSX Railroad is finally willing to sell the railroad property for a trail extension. Lake County, the City of Mount Dora, and the City of Tavares have agreed to partner and proceed with negotiations to acquire the land. The Trust for Public Land, a California-based nonprofit organization which has significant experience with similar endeavors, has committed its support for this rails-to-trails project. If it comes to fruition, the trail would connect the two cities to each other, as well as other areas in Lake County. Read more

Gilbert Park playground renovations completed
If you have kids, there's no time like the present to pack them in the car and head to Mount Dora's recently renovated iconic playground. Half of the area has been completely reimagined with fun new equipment. Read more

January brings first Antique Extravaganza of 2025
In case you didn't get enough retail therapy last month, the mother of all shopping opportunities returns to Mount Dora on January 17 through 19. The Antique Extravaganza at Renningers Antique Center features everything from rare collectibles to oddities, and it never disappoints. Read more

Daytrippin' to Black Bear Wilderness Area
Just a stone's throw from Mount Dora sits 1600 acres of unspoiled natural Florida. Make the short drive across State Road 46 and then hike through the preserve's bald cypress and boardwalk along the St. Johns River for a beautiful morning or afternoon. Read more

Local authors publish new book on Florida
A local writers group dubbed "Writers One Flight Up" published a new book that captures the unique essence of the Sunshine State. "Only in Florida!" is a collection of short stories, articles, and poems with a diverse range of narratives reflecting the rich cultural tapestry, vibrant landscapes, and eccentric characters that define Florida. All profits from the book are donated to the W.T. Bland Library in Mount Dora. The 238-page anthology is available on Amazon here.

Mount Dora's inaugural Daisy Music Fest hits stage in January
Daisy Music Fest will come to Mount Dora Community Building on January 11 at 6 p.m. and could become the most fun annual fundraiser in the city. Proceeds of the event will go to Libby's Legacy Breast Cancer Foundation in memory of Jeanette Bokland, a Mount Dora resident who passed away from breast cancer earlier this year. New project highlights downtown Mount Dora's historic buildings
Mount Dora Historical Society’s new project of placing 17 identification markers on downtown’s historic buildings is well underway. The volunteer-led effort will help educate the public about the city’s rich history. Read more

New smoothie spot opens at Fitness CF
Fitness CF completed renovations to the interior entrance of the gym to include a new smoothie bar integrated into the front desk. The offerings range from low-calorie smoothies to options with high protein and even shakes for kids. The gym's made-to-order smoothies are available to non-members and members alike.

Big Lots in Eustis is going out of business
The national discount chain, Big Lots, announced it will be going out of business and all of its locations will be selling off their inventory. Watch for some good deals at the Eustis location. Read more

Modernism Museum closes indefinitely
According to its website, the Modernism Museum Mount Dora on 4th Avenue in downtown Mount Dora has temporarily, but indefinitely, closed its doors. No reason was provided, however the Modernism Museum Shoppe across the street remains open as usual.

New family restaurant preps to open in Mount Dora
If all goes as scheduled, The Yardery will open this month, according to the business' social media. The downtown Mount Dora location is tucked between the parking garage and the railroad tracks on Baker Street will feature casual eats, drinks and yard games. Read more

A new shop for crafters opens in Tavares
For crafty DYI junkies, a new shop in Tavares may provide some fun inspiration and materials. Crochet Aweigh is a modern new yarn shop located at 122 E. Alfred Street in Tavares.

Three of Mount Dora parks gaining improvements
In addition to renovations at Gilbert Park's playground, other city parks are also seeing improvements. Construction of beautiful new basketball courts were completed at Summerview Park and the conversion of the tennis court in Donnelly Park to pickleball courts is expected to be completed soon.

Crime analyst hired to help reduce crime
Mount Dora Police Department hired a crime analyst to collect data which will help the department determine the deployment of officers and other resources based on the areas of town and times of day where and when crimes occur. Recently, the analyst presented data to the City Council that showed decreases in violent crimes in several categories.

Snow flurries to fall in Eustis weekly

Nothing kicks off the season better than a small-town Christmas Parade. Mount Dora boasts two very festive options on the same day. A new eatery featuring American favorites opened in the heart of downtown Eustis. Magnolia Breeze serves the classics for brunch, lunch and dinner in the former space of Taste of Brazil and CJ's Seafood at 108 N. Bay Street.

Forage & Cultivate plant boutique moves
Downtown Mount Dora's exotic plant boutique has moved from its tucked-away Royellou location. Forage & Cultivate now has a cozy space just around the corner at 109 E. 4th Avenue in the former space of Stitch & Gather.

Mount Dora swears in re-elected council members and new Mayor
This year the City of Mount Dora only had one seat up for grabs because the other three City Council seats didn't draw any challengers to the incumbents. After focusing his campaign on controlled growth, James Homich, a local attorney and former vice mayor of the city, won the mayoral race against Cathy Hoechst. New public art installed in Sunset Park

The entrance of downtown Mount Dora's Sunset Park now greets visitors with a cheerful mosaic created by local artist Diana Lucas with help from Juliet Davis of Yada Yada Pottery, and donated by a generous group of local women. Next time you're downtown, pop by Alexander Street and Fourth Avenue for a selfie.

New Vintage shop set to open in Mount Dora

A new retail shop, Cooper's Alley, is set to open on Donnelly Street in downtown Mount Dora in the quaint historic building that was recently occupied by St. Nick's Holiday Shoppe, and was previously home to The Painter's Daughter boutique. The new store will carry a curated mix of vintage and new home decor, as well as a selection of gifts.

Stitch & Gather closes downtown Mount Dora location

After a few years in downtown Mount Dora, Stitch & Gather, the fun customization and embroidery store, has closed its Fourth Avenue store. Instead of a brick-and-mortar location, the company will offer a convenient drop-box located just east of downtown at 436 E. Fifth Avenue.

Eastern Mount Dora continues to be plagued with severe odor

Even after a Florida Department of Environmental Protection consent order earlier this year, eastern Mount Dora continues to be plagued with a severe sewage-like odor. The alleged culprit is the City's water treatment facility. A study is wrapping up to determine whether further action is required by the City of Mount Dora to help alleviate the years-long environmental issue.

Election Day decision for Mount Dora voters
City of Mount Dora voters only have one seat on the ballot this year. In the race for mayor, residents will choose between former Mayor Cathy Hoechst and former Vice Mayor James Homich. Their biggest differences on issues are their positions on local overdevelopment, budgeting and municipal taxes. Hoechst has a Facebook page with more info and Homich has a website. Mount Dora City Council increases tax millage rate

This fiscal year the City of Mount Dora will balance its budget with a tax millage rate of 6.3 mills, which is 11.22% over the roll-back rate of 5.66 mills. It is less than the maximum millage rate on TRIM notices residents received over the summer.

Eustis welcomes new wine bar
After previously closing its doors on Magnolia Street in Eustis, The Wine Cellars Uncorked recently reopened as Uncorked in a new location in downtown Eustis. In addition to wine and beer, the cozy spot also offers a limited menu of apps, salads, sandwiches, soups and sweets. The new location is 120 E. Bay Street.

A new Mexican eatery to open in Mount Dora
Mount Dora will soon gain another spot for tacos, tequila and more. A new restaurant, Botanico Tacos & Tequila, is renovating the old Zellie's Pub location off of S.R. 19A and the outside already has a fresh new vibe. New store for kids of all ages
Recently, kids and adults scored a new hot spot for Legos in Mount Dora. A franchise of Bricks & Minifigs opened, and in addition to offering all things Lego, the store is also a venue for Lego-themed birthday parties. The business is located in the T.J. Maxx shopping center at 16844 U.S. Highway 441.

New Mount Dora store features fun local gifts
A cheerful new store named "Around Mount Dora" just opened downtown and features city-themed memorabilia and gifts at its Fifth Avenue location, which was formerly home to Walk in the Woods. In addition to unique Mount Dora wares, the store also has helpful visitor information readily available.

"Mount Dora North" and "South" projects proposed in Lake County
Mount Dora North and Mount Dora South are two new proposed developments in unincorporated Lake County. The combined projects are 593 acres and a total 3,746 residential units. Via its spokesperson, the City of Mount Dora opted not to answer whether the City supports the project as currently proposed, or if it has waste-water treatment capacity to accommodate it. The City of Mount Dora also declined to answer if it would have a representative at the upcoming September 4th rezoning hearing at Lake County Planning & Zoning Board. Mount Dora considers School Zone speed cameras
Mount Dora City Council is considering the possible installation of School Zone speed cameras near the city's four public schools. Florida's legislature approved the use of school speed zone cameras last year. Locally, hundreds of motorists exceed the 20 mph speed limits by 11 miles per hour or more during the opening and closing hours of Mount Dora schools daily, creating a danger for students and school staff. The City Council authorized Police Chief Mike Gibson to look into an ordinance that would need City Council approval. There would be no cost to tax payers, as the cost would be covered by $100 school zone speeding tickets. Gibson expects this will result in significant decreases in school zone speed violations.

Tax notices may alarm local residents
Property tax TRIM notices were received just as cities across Florida are preparing to finalize their budgets in September for the upcoming fiscal year. The tax notices reflect the highest potential tax rates by taxing authorities, but the final millage rate could be lower. Read more. Mount Dora City Council will vote on its final budget and tax rate at public meeting on September 17 at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Significant land use changes proposed for Lake County
Lake County will consider removing 1,424.27 acres from the Emeralda Marsh Rural Protection Area and rezoning them for a proposed development which includes 808 residential units, a golf course, marina and yacht club and 327 acres of open space. A public Lake County Zoning Board meeting will be held on September 4 at 9 a.m. There will also be a public Lake County Commission Meeting on October 1 at 9 a.m. Both meetings are held at 315 W. New performing arts center takes center stage in Eustis
North Lake County has a new theater for live shows, including plays, musicals, dance and comedic performances. Hideaway Performing Arts Center, owned by two local theatrical families, opened recently at 431 N. Plaza Drive in Eustis and will have classes in addition to performances.

Iconic historic church in Mount Dora to see big changes
It is arguably the most treasured church in Mount Dora. The little wooden white church at the southern entrance into the city has sat vacant even after an effort to rehab the church in 2015. Now an Altamonte Springs congregation plans to demolish it in order to build a larger version and hold worship services. Read more
Residents seek injunction against Mount Dora's Amco development

Four residents filed for an injunction seeking to stop the City of Mount Dora from proceeding with the recently approved Amco Development on State Road 46. The controversial project includes building heights of over 200 feet in an area where 100 feet was the maximum allowed. The residents are represented by local attorney and Mount Dora mayoral candidate James Homich.

Mount Dora Center for the Arts and G3 MD file suits against each other
In March 2022, the non-profit Mount Dora Center for the Arts (MDCA) sold their downtown building to G3 MD, LLC (G3), whose manager and registered agent is local resident Gerry Guenther. The deal had various components to it, including that G3 was to build a custom, 4,000 square-foot building for MDCA. The new building was to be directly behind the old one in the existing parking lot. Now, according to recent lawsuits, each party is claiming the other reneged on different material aspects of the agreement, including that MDCA's new building never came to fruition. Eustis preps for big mess
Messy Mania returns to Eustis this month. The third annual mother-son messy event takes place on August 31 and gets the duos to dig deep into their messy sides with different challenges and obstacle courses, They finish by getting hosed down by Eustis Fire Department. Babcock Home Furniture & More closing in Eustis
After the retailer's parent company, Conns Furniture, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, the announced closure of all 500 locations of Babcock Home Furniture & More, including those in downtown Eustis, Leesburg and Wildwood.

Pinesmoke Bee Company opened new location in Eustis
Last month a local apiary, Pinesmoke Bee Company, opened a retail and tasting location in Eustis. In addition to its local honey offerings, it also serves mead, a type of wine crafted from fermented honey and water. The business is located at 117 N. Bay Street.

Life Kitchen app gives health information on local restaurants
With a simple download, diners in Florida, including the Golden Triangle, can get easy access to restaurants' health inspection reports. Life Kitchen mobile app takes all Florida restaurants' most recent minor and serious violations (or lack thereof) to formulate a grade from A to F for the restaurant. Users can search restaurant by area. The app also allows diners to click for more details about any restaurant's inspection report and updates the grades after new inspection reports are issued.
